Two Strangers Trying Not to Kill Each Other
Southeast US Premiere
This tender and candid portrait of love, creativity, and aging explores the deeply intertwined lives of celebrated photographer Joel Meyerowitz and his wife, novelist and painter Maggie Barrett. After decades together, the couple faces a profound shift when Maggie suffers a serious fall, altering their roles and challenging their relationship. At 84 and 75, respectively, Joel and Maggie confront the complexities of caregiving, artistic recognition, and the deep-seated emotions that surface in the face of mortality.
As they face the realities of growing old together, their bond is tested, bringing long-hidden tensions to the surface. Shot over the course of a year, the film captures the couple's everyday interactions—sometimes tender, sometimes painfully honest—while shedding light on themes of devotion, self-expression, and the search for peace in a relationship that has spanned three decades.
Set against the picturesque backdrop of Tuscany, Two Strangers Trying Not to Kill Each Other is a beautifully nuanced exploration of a marriage filled with both laughter and conflict, offering a heartfelt reflection on the joys and challenges of creative partnership and lifelong love.
