Torah Tropical
East Coast Premiere
In a vivid portrayal of resilience and faith, Torah Tropical chronicles a Colombian family's journey through the complexities of identity, belonging, and survival. Set against the backdrop of Cali's drug war-ravaged streets, Menajem, a humble baker, and his wife Isska, both converts to Orthodox Judaism, nurture their faith within the close-knit Beit David community. Determined to escape escalating gang violence, they yearn to make Aliyah to Israel—a place they see as their Promised Land—despite Israel’s refusal to recognize their conversions.
Faced with rejection, the family takes on a perilous plan to travel to Israel under the guise of Christian tourists visiting for Easter. With nerves stretched thin, Isska, Menajem, and their young daughters, Ruth and Jaia, confront a daunting future as they embark on a journey that intertwines hope with sacrifice.
From intimate scenes of religious rituals to moments of unexpected humor, Torah Tropical captivates with stunning visuals and powerful narration that brings Isska’s prayers and inner struggles to life. This evocative documentary examines the family's undaunted spirit as they strive to forge a new life, offering a poetic exploration of the universal quest for identity and a poignant reflection on love, faith, and the lengths we go to protect our loved ones.
This special premiere event will include the attendance of director Ezra Axelrod, who will introduce the film and participate in a Q&A after the screening.
