Sand Flakes

Southeast US Premiere

This heartfelt and moving coming-of-age story centers around David, an aspiring teenage writer, and his mother, Iris, who abandoned her own dreams years ago due to a crippling illness. The story unfolds in an isolated Negev town, tracing David's journey as he grapples with his mother's ailment and his own dreams of the future. Through his writing, David embarks on an exploration of his family's history and his own identity. The film’s strikingly beautiful animation sequences offer a glimpse into David's inner world as he grapples with the challenges of growing up. Sand Flakes is a powerful and personal film that stands as a testament to the power of storytelling and the ways in which art can help us understand ourselves and the world around us. This beautifully felt film about family, love, and forgiveness is written and directed by mother-son duo, Gitit Kabiri & Yahel Kabiri, who draw inspiration from their own experiences growing up in Yerucham (Miami’s sister city) and spent over six years creating this labor of love.
