Black to the Promised Land

Directed by Madeleine Ali

UK | 95 minutes | 1992

In 1992, 11 black high-school students from Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, confront a culture, people, language, and way-of-life different from anything they’ve ever known. Travelling to a kibbutz in Israel, the students and the kibbutz members work side-by-side, farming the Holy Land together and engaging in dialogue about each other in poetically candid ways. Stereotypical expectations abound on both sides, quickly shattered through living and working together. The true challenge will be how the students take their experiences back to Brooklyn, and whether the kibbutz members will remain enlightened by their once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
