Before William Shakespeare (Paul Mescal) changed the world of theater forever, he was a young Latin tutor infatuated with a peculiar woman of the woods, Agnes Hathaway (Jessie Buckley). Fiercely independent and deeply attuned to the rhythms of nature, Agnes lives apart from the gossip of her village until she and Shakespeare fall in love and build a family together. But as London and its Globe Theatre lure him away for months at a time, tragedy strikes when their young son, Hamnet, becomes gravely ill. Awash with guilt and grief, Shakespeare seeks redemption the only way he knows how—through his writing.

With haunting, lush cinematography and a transcendent score, Zhao and writer Maggie O’Farrell craft a stirring portrait of love, loss, and artistic legacy. Hamnet reimagines the inspiration behind Hamlet as a timeless love story that continues to echo through art and literature for more than four centuries.
