This captivating documentary showcases the work and life of Celia Dropkin, one of the greatest Yiddish poets renowned for her erotic poetry that both scandalized and delighted readers during the 1920s and 30s. Considered a radical figure during her lifetime, Dropkin fearlessly explored themes of desire, passion, and physical sensuality in her writing, leaving an indelible mark on literature. In this film, her pioneering poems are brought to life through powerful dramatic readings, archival footage, historic recordings, and dazzling animations. Along with Dropkin’s descendants, director Eli Gorn interviews the crème de la crème of the Jewish artistic world, including famous contemporary writers (poet Edward Hirsch, Michael Wex, and Irena Klepfisz), and esteemed Yiddish translators (Kathryn Hellerstein, Sheva Zucker, and Zohar Weiman-Kelman). The film also features the musical talents of the Klezmatics and Tsvey Brider, who have drawn inspiration from Dropkin's words, transforming them into captivating music. Burning Off the Page compellingly argues for the revival of Celia Dropkin's significant literary legacy, shedding light on her enduring influence in the world of art and culture.
